Some 2,000 feet above sea level, another side of Puerto Galera tells a very different story—one shaped by mountains, marble, fairways and the vision of a man who saw possibility where others might have simply seen rugged terrain.
Long before this area became the mountain retreat it is today, Tony Taylor imagined creating something extraordinary on the slopes overlooking Puerto Galera.
What began as one man’s dream of building a golf course in the mountains would eventually grow into Ponderosa Resort Puerto Galera—a destination that today brings together golf, mountain stays, dining and hiking experiences against sweeping views of the mountains and sea.
At the heart of it all remains the story of its founder.
From marble to the mountains
Tony Taylor’s relationship with Puerto Galera began long before the first golf ball was struck at Ponderosa Resort Puerto Galera.
He recognized the potential of the white and green-streaked marble found in Puerto Galera’s mountains, becoming closely connected to the area through the marble industry. But over time, his relationship with the place became something more personal.
In 1984, Tony Taylor retired from MarbleCraft Philippines and relocated to Mindoro. By the following year, he had made the province his home, taking up farming and beginning construction of the first iteration of the Ponderosa clubhouse.
Retirement could have meant slowing down. For Tony Taylor, it became the beginning of perhaps his most personal undertaking.
He wanted to build his dream golf course in the mountains.
It was an ambitious idea, particularly at a time when Puerto Galera was still developing into the tourism destination travelers know today. Family accounts recall journeys from Batangas to Puerto Galera aboard slow pump boats, a reminder of how different—and considerably less accessible—the destination was then.
Yet where others might have seen distance, difficult terrain and limitations, Tony Taylor saw possibility.
And perhaps that says as much about the man as it does about Ponderosa Resort Puerto Galera.
Building a dream one fairway at a time
Tony Taylor did not simply choose a beautiful location for a golf course. He chose a landscape that had already become part of his life.
The first four holes of his dream course were completed in 1987. By 1989, all nine holes were finished, creating the golf course at Ponderosa Resort Puerto Galera, admired for the way its fairways worked with the natural beauty of the mountain landscape.
There is something deeply personal about building a place like Ponderosa.
A business can begin with a plan. A resort can be designed according to a formula. But Ponderosa grew from Tony Taylor’s relationship with the land—from years spent knowing its terrain and imagining what life on the mountain could become.
Golf may have started the dream, but it did not define its limits.
From 1993 to 2010, Tony Taylor continued developing the subdivision around the golf course, gradually creating an exclusive residential community around what he had built.
The subdivision was initially called Taylorville before eventually becoming known as Ponderosa, a name coined by Tony Taylor for his property. Before then, the area was simply part of Barangay San Isidro. Over time, the name became so closely associated with the surrounding area and mountain that Ponderosa became an address of its own.
What Tony Taylor had created was becoming more than somewhere people visited to play a round of golf. It was becoming a place where people could belong.
Seeing another side of Puerto Galera
From Ponderosa Resort Puerto Galera, the destination reveals itself from an entirely different perspective. The coastline stretches below, mountains frame the landscape and the Verde Island Passage becomes part of the horizon.
The mountain offered something quieter—a place where visitors could appreciate Puerto Galera away from the activity of the shoreline.
Long before travelers began searching for slower, more immersive experiences, Tony Taylor understood the appeal of simply being surrounded by nature.
His idea was straightforward but meaningful: give people a reason to come up the mountain, and once they arrived, create a place where they would want to stay.
Over the years, Ponderosa Resort Puerto Galera grew around that idea. What began with golf expanded into a broader mountain experience, but its character continued to come from the landscape that first inspired its founder.
The man behind Ponderosa
Ponderosa reflected much of who Tony Taylor was—an entrepreneur, sportsman and adventurer with a deep connection to Mindoro. His journey in Puerto Galera began with marble, but ultimately grew into something far more personal.
His family remembers him simply, yet meaningfully, as “a man who made a difference.”
Ponderosa became one of the clearest expressions of that legacy, bringing together his love for sport, his entrepreneurial spirit and his belief in the potential of the land.
More than building a golf course, Tony Taylor created something people would value, remember and carry forward.
When a dream becomes a family legacy
Tony Taylor passed away in 2011 at the age of 85. By then, the dream he began decades earlier had already left its mark on Puerto Galera, particularly through the establishment of the only golf course in Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, the exclusive residential community around it, and the people whose lives had become intertwined with Ponderosa.
His passing could have marked the closing chapter of that story.
Instead, his family eventually found themselves returning to the dream he had left behind.
The years surrounding the pandemic gave the family an opportunity to continue developing the property. Through improvements and careful work, Ponderosa was revitalized with the goal of creating a destination loved by the community while contributing to Puerto Galera’s tourism landscape.
That makes the Ponderosa of today particularly meaningful.
The additions belong to a new chapter, but the heart of the place still leads back to its founder.
Every improvement carries with it a responsibility—to remember why Ponderosa was built in the first place and to preserve the connection between the property, the mountain and the community that Tony Taylor valued.
Keeping his memory on the mountain
Tony Taylor’s legacy lives on most visibly through the Tony Taylor Golf Cup, a fitting tribute to a man whose dream was so closely tied to the sport he loved.
More than a tournament, it represents something personal. Each time golfers return to the course in his name, they are gathering on the same mountain where an idea once existed only in Tony Taylor’s imagination.
There is something powerful in that continuity.
The landscape he chose is still there. The fairways he envisioned still follow the mountain. People still make their way uphill to experience the view that once convinced him there was something special about this place.
And his family is still there, caring for what he started.

Tony Taylor first came to these mountains seeing value in the marble beneath them.
