Montblanc Signs & Symbols: Celebrating the New Year with the Myths and Legends of the East

Drawing on the enduring power of Eastern mythology and symbolism, Montblanc presents the newest creations in its Signs & Symbols collection: The Legend of Zodiacs – the Goat Limited Edition 512 and A Journey Among Dragons – The Imperial Dragon Limited Editions 88 and 8, paying homage to two revered figures of East Asian culture. Each creation transforms an ancient story into a contemporary expression of artistry through intricate craftsmanship, precious materials and richly layered design.

The Legend of Zodiacs – The Goat Limited Edition 512

On February 6, 2027, the Chinese New Year will usher in the Year of the Goat, the eighth sign of the Chinese zodiac. The sign is traditionally associated with kindness, peace and creativity. Marking this occasion, The Legend of Zodiacs – The Goat Limited Edition 512 captures the spirit of the goat whose gentle and artistic nature is given additional strength, ambition and courage in 2027.

The writing instrument’s cap, made from Ag 925 sterling silver, is adorned with a richly symbolic depiction of a goat. Its upward-curving horns express strength and power, while its long fur evokes wealth and abundance. Standing atop a rock, the goat conveys elevated status and quiet authority. Grass beneath its feet represents nourishment and a good life. The persimmon tree behind it suggests that good fortune and blessings will soon come to fruition. The platinum-coated barrel is delicately engraved with a pattern inspired by the Chinese knot, a symbol of luck. Precious jade set into the cone reflects the gentleness and kind nature associated with the goat. The upcoming year of the goat, 2027, is engraved on the cap ring alongside the seven previous years of the goat.

The handcrafted, rhodium-coated solid Au 750 gold nib is decorated with a goat motif, while the Montblanc emblem in luminous mother-of-pearl crowns the cap, set in black onyx and covered with sapphire glass. Limited to 512 pieces globally, this edition honours both the eighth sign of the zodiac and the auspicious number eight, multiplied three times to enhance prosperity. The edition is completed by matching accessories, including silver goat-shaped cufflinks, a fine stationery notebook decorated with an illustrated goat design, and an ink bottle presented in a box bearing the same artwork.

A Journey Among Dragons – The Imperial Dragon Limited Editions 88 and 8

A source of wonder and fascination, dragons occupy a revered place in East Asian lore as some of the oldest and most important creatures with high spiritual power, bestowing luck, wealth, wisdom and peace. The twelfth and final chapter in Montblanc’s A Journey Among Dragons series is dedicated to the five-clawed Imperial Dragon, a benevolent master of wind, rain and cosmic balance. In Ancient China, it was the divine emblem of the Son of Heaven, rising from the oceans towards the heavens and embodying supreme authority, life-sustaining energy and transcendent wisdom. Its red and yellow colours evoke prosperity, vitality and good fortune, as well as the dragon’s eternal role as the emperor’s divine emblem and guardian of the empire.

The Imperial Dragon Limited Edition 88

Limited to just 88 pieces, the Imperial Dragon coils majestically around the cap and barrel. Its head crowns the Ag 925 sterling silver cap as a raised relief sculpture, with yellow citrines set into its eyes to echo the citrine adorning the cone. The body, partly adorned with diamonds, moulds itself to the barrel as a delicate engraving beneath a red and yellow lacquer, complemented by background ornaments representing Chinese auspicious clouds. The colours also carry meaning: yellow represents supreme power and the emperor himself, while red signifies prosperity, vitality and auspicious energy.

The design is elevated with solid Au 750 yellow gold fittings and an additional dragon engraving on the forepart. A Kui Dragon motif decorates the handcrafted nib made of solid Au 750 gold. Associated in legend with rain, thunder and control over natural forces, the Kui Dragon reinforces the themes of sovereignty and auspicious power. The cap top is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl, inlaid in black onyx and covered with sapphire glass.

The Imperial Dragon Limited Edition 8

Elevating craftsmanship to its zenith, the rare Limited Edition 8 reinterprets the Imperial Dragon in an elaborate sculptural composition. Crafted from solid Au 750 yellow gold, the cap and barrel are adorned with a three-dimensional hand-engraved dragon fully set with yellow and radiant orange sapphires. Its solid Au 750 yellow gold head and claws emerge from a background of hand-engraved lucky clouds, while further yellow sapphires illuminate the dragon’s eyes and the cone.

Each detail amplifies the symbolism of imperial authority and celestial protection. Solid Au 750 yellow gold fittings and a dragon engraving on the forepart enrich the design, while the handcrafted solid Au 750 gold nib is set with a yellow sapphire and decorated with the Kui Dragon motif, recalling its legendary command of rain, thunder and the forces of nature. The cap top is crowned with the Montblanc diamond, surrounded by brilliant-cut diamonds. Limited to only eight pieces worldwide, the edition brings the series to a spectacular conclusion.

With the Signs & Symbols collection, Montblanc honours the profound wisdom of Asian culture by blending time-honoured traditions with the Maison’s elevated craftsmanship. Beyond their roles as tools of self-expression, the limited edition writing instruments become symbols of prosperity, luck and boundless creativity.
