‘It Needs to Stop’: McKinley Community Outraged After Fatal Husky Attack on Local Cat

TAGUIG CITY – The peaceful streets of McKinley West are filled with grief and growing calls for accountability following the tragic death of "Ghost," one of the area’s most beloved community cats. The feline passed away on April 16, 2026, after being mauled by three huskies during a late-night walk along Le Grand Avenue.

According to witnesses and the volunteer group Cats of McKinley, the incident occurred around midnight in front of a local establishment. A video captured by a bystander showed a male individual walking three huskies when the dogs suddenly attacked the unsuspecting black-and-white cat. Witnesses alleged that the owner did not intervene effectively and left the scene immediately after the encounter, leaving Ghost severely injured.

Kind-hearted residents rushed Ghost to a nearby veterinary clinic, but despite emergency efforts, she succumbed to internal complications and severe injuries.

A Gentle Soul Remembered

Ghost was not just a stray; she was a staple of the McKinley community. Volunteers described her as a "careful and silent" cat who spent years living near a footbridge before slowly learning to trust humans.

"Ghost was one of our kindest community cats," said a representative from Cats of McKinley. "She finally felt safe enough to approach people without hesitation, only for that safety to be shattered in the most preventable way."

Demands for Accountability

The incident has ignited a firestorm on social media under the hashtag #JusticeForGhost, with many demanding that the dog owner be held liable under the Animal Welfare Act (RA 8485). Advocates argue that the owner’s failure to restrain his pets constitutes criminal negligence.

Legal experts note that under Philippine law, pet owners are responsible for the damages caused by their animals. "This wasn't just a simple accident; it was a failure of responsibility," stated Ginger Friends PH, a rescue advocacy group.

Ongoing Investigation

Cats of McKinley has assured the public that they are coordinating with animal welfare lawyers and gathering evidence—including CCTV footage and witness statements—to file a formal case. In their latest update, the group urged for patience as the legal process unfolds.

"We urge everyone to keep your dogs on a leash at all times," the group stated. "If you cannot handle your dogs during walks, do not bring them outside. This is for the safety of people, pets, and community animals alike."

As of this week, the community continues to leave flowers and small tributes at the site where Ghost used to wait for her daily meals, a somber reminder of the need for compassion in shared urban spaces.
