Yeng Constantino Reveals She Auditioned for the SexBomb Girls as a Teenager

Before captivating the country as the grand winner of Pinoy Dream Academy, OPM Pop Rock Royalty Yeng Constantino almost took a very different path in show business: joining the iconic Filipino dance-pop group, the SexBomb Girls.

During a recent appearance on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, the hitmaker looked back on her journey as a 14-year-old aspiring performer, revealing that her late mother encouraged her to try out for the renowned group.

"Ito ay parte ng buhay ko na talagang... hindi kasi ako magaling sumayaw kaya ang reaction ko ay medyo na ano ako, buti po hindi ako kinwalify (qualify) talaga," Constantino recalled with a laugh, admitting that dancing was far from her strong suit.

Her mother, however, saw the tryouts as a potential gateway into entertainment during a time when the SexBomb Girls—led by members like Rochelle Pangilinan and Jopay Paguia—were dominating local television and pop culture. "At that time sina Ma'am Rochelle, Ma'am Jopay sobrang sikat. Sabi ni Mama, 'baka ito ang paraan. Subukan mo anak mag-audition dito,'" she shared.

Constantino went on to express her deep admiration for the group's lasting impact on Filipino pop culture. "Talagang sobra pong legendary. Bawat ilalabas nilang kanta talagang sasayawin ng lahat—sa Christmas party, birthday party," she said.

In the same interview, the singer-songwriter reflected on her early start as a composer, revealing that she wrote her breakout anthem Hawak Kamay at age 14 for an adopted cousin.

While her dance audition didn't pan out, Constantino's musical talent ultimately launched her into superstardom. She recently marked two decades in the music industry with a two-night concert, Biyaheng Bente, held at the iconic Araneta Coliseum.
