RARE PINKISH DOLPHIN SPOTTED NEAR OMAN’S QANTAB BEACH: HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Screengrab from: The Gulf Insider

A rare sighting of a pale, pinkish dolphin swimming alongside darker dolphins near Qantab Beach in Muscat, Oman, has drawn attention from wildlife enthusiasts, with marine experts examining the animal’s identity and unusual coloration.

According to Oman Observer, the original footage of the dolphin is considered authentic by local experts. However, the exact species and the reason for its pinkish appearance remain uncertain.

Aida al Jabri, a marine environment specialist at Oman’s Environment Authority, identified the dolphin in the original footage as a Risso’s dolphin. The species typically becomes lighter as it ages, with accumulated scars contributing to its pale appearance.

Why Does the Dolphin Appear Pink?

Dolphins can appear pinkish for different reasons, depending on their species and physical characteristics. In some dolphins, blood vessels near the skin’s surface can become more visible, creating a pinkish flush. In others, age-related changes and scarring can cause their skin to appear lighter.

Risso’s dolphins are generally dark gray or brown when young but can become pale gray or almost white as they mature. Their skin is also prone to scarring, which contributes to their changing appearance. However, experts have yet to establish the exact reason for the pinkish hue of the dolphin spotted near Oman.

Not the Same as the Amazon River Dolphin

Although pink dolphins are commonly associated with the Amazon River in South America, the animal spotted off Oman is believed to be a marine dolphin, not an Amazon river dolphin.

The species identification remains important because different dolphins can develop pale or pinkish appearances for different reasons. Experts have cautioned against drawing conclusions based on color alone.

Meanwhile, some versions of the sighting circulating online have raised concerns about altered footage. A fact-check published by CheckThis on October 21 reported that certain videos had been digitally edited to make the dolphin appear more intensely pink than in the original recording.

The sighting near Qantab Beach has highlighted the diversity of marine life in Oman's coastal waters, while further expert assessment may help clarify the animal’s identity and unusual appearance.
