Sony is bringing a piece of its audio heritage into the present with the MDR-3R, a reimagined version of its iconic headphones first introduced alongside the original Walkman® in 1979. Combining its distinctive retro design with modern USB-C® connectivity, the new on-ear wired headphones offer a fresh take on a classic for today's music lovers.
The MDR-3R retains the lightweight, open-ear construction and signature design details of the original MDR-3 while introducing updated features for everyday listening, calls, and entertainment. The headphones are coming soon to Sony Centres nationwide.
Timeless Design, Reimagined
The MDR-3R pays tribute to Sony's audio legacy through its faithful recreation of the original design. From the iconic headband bend and rolled side arms to the precision-finished SONY and “Dynamic Stereo Headphones” markings and perforated sound holes, the headphones preserve the distinctive details that made the original a recognizable part of portable music history.
Its lightweight open-ear design is built for everyday comfort, whether worn on the ears or draped around the neck. Carefully selected aluminum and stainless steel materials contribute to its balanced construction, making the MDR-3R Sony's lightest overhead headphone model in its current lineup, based on its November 2026 lineup.
The headphones also come with interchangeable blue and orange ear pads, allowing users to switch between colors to suit their style. The nostalgic experience extends to the packaging and manual, both designed to echo the vintage visual identity of the original MDR-3.
Usability and Connectivity: Made for Modern Devices
While its design looks to the past, the MDR-3R is built for today's devices. Its USB-C® connection allows users to plug directly into compatible smartphones, tablets, and PCs without additional adapters.
With no battery to charge and no wireless pairing required, the wired headphones offer a simple, ready-to-use listening experience. Users can move between music, videos, calls, and online meetings with a direct connection.
An in-line remote provides convenient access to playback controls, including play, pause, track skipping, and volume adjustment. The integrated microphone supports hands-free calls and voice assistant use, helping users stay connected throughout the day.
The MDR-3R also features a serrated cable design intended to resist snags and tangles, making it easier to store and carry.
A Familiar Sound, Tuned for Today
The MDR-3R draws inspiration from the sound signature of the original MDR-3, while refining it for contemporary listening preferences.
Its 23 mm driver units and open-air design aim to deliver natural vocals and balanced sound, with deeper bass, extended highs, and improved vocal clarity. The open construction also creates a spacious, airy soundstage within its compact on-ear form.
The result is a listening experience that retains the character of the original while adapting to modern music, streaming, and media consumption.
Sustainability and Accessibility
Sony says the MDR-3R reflects its broader efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its products and practices. The individual product packaging contains no plastic, supporting the company's sustainability initiatives and its goal of achieving a zero environmental footprint across the Sony Group by 2050.
The company also highlights its commitment to inclusive, human-centric design, aiming to make its audio products more accessible to users across different ages, abilities, and environments.
A Classic for a New Generation
With the MDR-3R, Sony brings together the nostalgia of its portable audio beginnings and the convenience of modern wired listening. Its lightweight design, interchangeable ear pads, USB-C connectivity, and updated sound make it a contemporary reinterpretation of a familiar classic.
The Sony MDR-3R is coming soon to Sony Centres nationwide.
Note: USB-C connectivity on the MDR-3R is not intended or recommended for use with Walkman® devices.
