Apple unveils iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone
Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone space with the iPhone Duo, introducing a new design that transforms from a compact iPhone into the largest display ever offered on an iPhone.
Described by Apple as a device that is “beautiful, versatile, and durable,” the iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding display when opened and a 5.4-inch outer display when folded. Both displays support ProMotion and Always-On functionality.
A foldable iPhone experience
The iPhone Duo is designed around flexibility, allowing users to position the device in different configurations for activities such as watching videos, making calls, taking photos, and multitasking.
Apple has also optimized iOS for the larger foldable screen, allowing the experience to transition between the outer and inner displays. The inner screen features a nano-texture finish, while the device uses a titanium frame and hinge cover for added durability.
The phone also carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, giving the foldable design added protection for everyday use.
Powered by the A20 Pro
Under the hood, the iPhone Duo is powered by Apple's A20 Pro chip, featuring a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine.
The device is also equipped with a thermal system designed to help manage heat during demanding tasks, while its dual-battery architecture helps deliver longer usage in a slim foldable body. Apple rates the iPhone Duo for up to 44 hours of video playback when using the outer display and up to 31 hours when using the inner display.
Dual 48MP camera system
Photography remains a major focus, with the iPhone Duo featuring a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system consisting of a 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera.
The phone supports high-resolution 24MP and 48MP photos, macro photography, Dolby Vision video recording up to 4K at 120fps, improved low-light video, and next-generation portrait features.
Apple is also introducing foldable-specific camera tools such as Duo Preview, which lets subjects see a preview of the shot on the outer display while the main cameras are being used. (Apple)
For selfies and video calls, the iPhone Duo has a 12MP Center Stage front camera, along with an under-display FaceTime camera.
Built for a more versatile iPhone experience
Beyond its hardware, Apple has developed software features specifically around the foldable form factor. The larger inner display provides more room for multitasking and different iOS experiences, while the device can be positioned in configurations suited for hands-free viewing and other activities.
The iPhone Duo also includes Camera Control, Dynamic Island, 5G, Wi-Fi 7, MagSafe charging, and eSIM connectivity. Apple confirms that the device does not have a physical SIM tray and activates through eSIM. (Apple)
